Are You Seeing Symptoms of Dementia in Your Elderly Loved One?

Are you seeing dementia anger and denial in your elderly loved one?   Or in yourself as you struggle to understand and help them? Is it breaking your heart?

Age Dementia Symptoms Can Sneak Up on You

It’s especially frustrating in the beginning. You might not be sure of what you are seeing in your family member. Your loved ones can seem to grasp what you say only to have no recollection of the conversation the next day . . . or 5 minutes later!

Other Typical Dementia Symptoms and Signs to Look for Are:

  1. A tendency to repeat oneself
  2. The inability to learn new things or a marked resistance to the idea of learning new things
  3. Frequent confusion and a significant degree of forgetfulness and misplacing things
  4. Marked changes in personality
  5. A noticeable decreasing  in social contact
  6. Increased restlessness

Dementia Anger and Denial

Along with possible anti-social behavior; Dementia can bring on a higher degree of irritability in your aging loved one.  Unexplained anger can result, and sometimes can explode. These new behaviors can violently swing to the opposite extreme and you might see unexplained sadness or joy.  Various forms of depression can come along with the mood swings in dementia. All these signs and symptoms can be very scary as both you and your loved one begin to feel completely out of control.

As the dementia progresses, other issues surface and safety becomes your greatest concern. Sometimes we really want to pretend that nothing is wrong, but denial won’t make dementia go away.
